University of Mumbai has introduced a new Apprenticeship Embedded B.E. Degree Programme. It will give engineering students an opportunity to gain practical industry experience with their degree. The initiative aims to bridge the gap between classroom learning and the skills required in professional world. The programme has been introduced under the Faculty of Science and Technology. It is aligned with the objectives of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and the guidelines of the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE).
Selected final-year engineering students will undergo one year of apprenticeship training during the seventh and eighth semesters. The training will allow students to work in an industry environment. It will also help understand how engineering knowledge is applied to real projects and operations.
Students will have to complete at least 1,260 hours of practical training during the apprenticeship period. On successful completion, they will earn 42 academic credits as part of their B.E. programme.
Only up to 15% of final-year B.E. students will be allowed to participate in the Apprenticeship Embedded B.E. Degree Programme. Students must have secured a minimum of 6.75 CGPA by the end of the fifth semester to become eligible.
Selection will be based on merit. Students with a higher CGPA will be preferred. Students pursuing Honours, Minor, or Honours with Research programmes will not be eligible for the apprenticeship route.
The eligibility rules are designed to ensure that students participating in the programme can manage the academic and practical requirements of the course.
The Mumbai University apprenticeship programme focuses on preparing engineering students for the challenges of the workplace. Students are expected to develop important professional skills. It includes communication, teamwork, problem-solving, decision-making and time management.
