‘We’re Sorry’: Video Of Cops Telling Abhijeet Dipke About Grandmother’s Death

New Delhi:

The Delhi Police has released a video showing a female officer breaking the bad news of his grandmother’s death to the Cockroach Janta Party founder, Abhijeet Dipke.

“Sir, I want to share some information… it is unfortunate news… we are very sorry for that. Your grandmother has died,” said the officer.

The CJP leader, who had planned to lead a protest at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar demanding Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation and was under detention, didn’t respond.

Dejected by the death of his grandmother, Dipke placed both his hands on his lowered head. After a few tense seconds, he says, “I see”.

As Dipke took his time to process the information, a male officer interjected.

“Sir, if you have made up your mind to attend your grandmother’s funeral, we would arrange for whatever transportation you want,” the officer said.

A few seconds later, the officer asked him, “Will you stay here?”

“I will stay,” replied Dipke.

“You don’t want to go?” the male officer asked again but got the same reply.

The officer then asked Dipke if he wanted to talk to any of his relatives.

“If you want to talk to any of your family members, we can connect with them through our official number,” he said.

Dipke replied that he didn’t remember any phone number.

The officer then told him that the funeral would be held the next day. To this, Dipke replied that he wouldn’t be able to attend.

The CJP founder was released from detention today. He left for his hometown in Maharashtra to attend the last rites of his grandmother.

The police released the video to refute the claim that he hadn’t been told about his grandmother’s death.

They said the news had been conveyed with due sensitivity and assistance was offered for his travel to his hometown, but he “declined” the offer.

Reacting to the video, the CJP leader alleged that he wasn’t allowed to speak with his cousin.

“I had requested to let me speak to my cousin who lives with my grandmother. Asked for my phone just for a couple of minutes so I could at least take out the number of my cousin. Why didn’t Delhi Police let me use my phone? I had also asked for a call with a lawyer, which was again denied,” he wrote on X.

“At 3:30 in the morning, Delhi Police asked me to call my father and inform him that tomorrow I’ll be going to jail for a long time. The same father who has just lost his mother. How much more trauma did you want to put my family through after we already lost my grandmother?” he added.

Dipke, Ashutosh Ranka and Saurav Das — the three persons at the forefront of the pressure group — had been taken under preventive detention from a plane after they landed in Delhi. They were on their way to lead the protest at Jantar Mantar.

They were among the 3,000 CJP supporters and opposition leaders who were detained as Delhi police clamped down on the agitation. All of them were later released.

The CJP has vowed that they will continue the protest.
